Where did they come from?

The San Diego Surfers Women's Rugby Club is the only women’s club in San Diego. We originated in January 1975 as Ombush, then sponsored by Old Mission Beach Athletic Club (OMBAC).

In 1980 we changed our name and became known as the Rio Grande Surfers under the sponsorship of Fred Thompson and the Guadalajara National Philharmonic. This year also saw the Surfers become the first international women’s rugby club to set foot on the Kiwi shores of New Zealand. To this day, we still boast of having an undefeated record against international teams.

In 1997 we applied for non-profit status and officially changed our name to the San Diego Surfers Women’s Rugby Club. We have had the honor to play an exhibition game during the halftime of a San Diego Chargers professional football game and have appeared on the Channel 8 news coverage twice promoting women’s rugby in San Diego.

As hosts of the annual Champagne Classic, the premier tournament for California women’s rugby, the Surfers attract teams from around the country. Each year the competition gets better and California is considered to be one of the best areas in the United States for women’s rugby. As a growing sport in San Diego, our goal is to further rugby’s future in America’s Finest City.
