FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How much does it cost to play rugby?
Surfers season dues have historically ranged from $350–$450 for the 15s season that runs October–April, which works out to approximately $44–$56 per month over 8 months. For comparison, that’s generally less per month than a fitness studio, spin studio, or CrossFit membership—and your rugby dues provide not only regular practices and coaching, but also games, competition, team events, and a built-in community.
What do my dues cover?
Your dues help cover the cost of running the club and participating in the season, including field permits, practices, coaching, league games, club operations, team programming, and qualifying postseason travel accommodations. Hotels are covered for qualifying away travel such as Tempe, Regionals in Las Vegas, and Nationals. Dues apply to all players, not just those selected for game-day rosters.
What isn't included?
Transportation costs and flights for postseason travel are not included in dues. Players should also expect some additional personal expenses throughout the season.
What does it cost for a new player to get started?
New players will need some basic rugby gear. Surfers-branded rugby shorts and socks typically cost $75–$90, and cleats are approximately $80–$150. A mouthguard is also recommended/required for play and varies in price.
That means a new player should budget approximately $155–$240+ for initial gear, in addition to season dues.
The big picture: rugby is both a sport and a community. For roughly $44–$56/month, players get regular training, coaching, competition, events, and the opportunity to be part of the Surfers throughout the season.
