How do I join the team?

Fill out our interest form so we know you’re interested, can look out for you at a practice and can keep you updated on upcoming practices, events, and opportunities to get involved.

The best way to get to know the team, though, is to come out to a practice or event! No experience is required—we’ll show you the ropes, introduce you to the team, and answer any questions you have.​

Do I need rugby experience?

Not at all! Many of our players started with zero experience. Our coaches and teammates will teach you everything you need to know.

​

Am I athletic enough?

If you enjoy being active and are willing to learn, you're ready to play rugby. Athletes from all sports—and complete beginners—are welcome.

What ages can join?

We welcome adult women (18+) of all ages and experience levels.

​

What should I wear to my first practice?

Comfortable athletic clothes, cleats or running shoes, and bring water. If you don't have rugby gear yet, that's completely okay.

When is the season?

Our 15s season runs from fall through the spring, regular season starting in January and post season starting April through May. 7s seasons starts around May through early August.

I'm just a fan, where can I watch the San Diego Surfers Rugby team play?

Our home games are usually held on Saturday mornings at the field next to the skatepark at Robb Field in Ocean Beach, San Diego, CA. Our away games vary depending on our opponent but usually will be in the Southern California area or in Tempe, Arizona.

Are your games streamed?

Yes! Most of our regular season games are streamed on Veo Live. You can download in the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store

Our post season games are usually streamed on the USA Rugby youtube account. Follow our Instagram for the most up to date live streaming links.​

What does it cost to play?

There are club dues each season that help cover the cost of running the program. The exact amount may vary from season to season, but dues help ensure we can provide a safe, competitive, and enjoyable experience for every player.

What do my season dues cover?

Your dues help fund many of the essential costs of operating the club, including:

​

• Experienced coaching staff

• Practice field rentals

• Home match field rentals

• Rugby equipment (balls, tackle pads, cones, etc.)

• Match-day operations

• League and administrative fees

• Club operations throughout the season

• Warm Up T-Shirt

As a nonprofit, volunteer-run organization, every dollar is reinvested back into the team and our players.

​

Are there any additional costs?

Yes. Players are also responsible for:

• USA Rugby & Southern California Rugby (CIPP) registration, which provides insurance coverage and is required to participate in contact practices and matches.

• Personal rugby gear, including:

  • Cleats

  • Mouthguard (required)

  • Rugby shorts and socks

  • Optional team apparel and merchandise

Do I have to pay everything up front?

Not necessarily. We understand that starting a new sport can be a financial commitment, so payment plans may be available depending on the season.

Are there ways to reduce the cost?

Absolutely! We never want finances to be the reason someone can't play rugby.

We offer several ways to make the season more affordable:

• Fundraising Credits: Throughout the year, players can participate in club fundraisers and earn credits that can be applied toward their season dues.

• Clydesdale Scholarship Fund: We proudly partner with the Clydesdale Scholarship Fund, which provides financial assistance to eligible players to help cover club dues and reduce the financial barrier to participating.

I'm new to rugby. Do I need to pay before trying it?

No! We encourage prospective players to attend a few practices before committing to the season. It's the perfect opportunity to meet the team, learn the fundamentals, and see if rugby is right for you. Once you decide to join, we'll guide you through registration, dues, and any available financial assistance.
