The Clydesdale Scholarship Fund was created to ensure that financial barriers never prevent a player from experiencing everything the San Diego Surfers Rugby Club has to offer.
Funded and operated by former San Diego Surfers who proudly identify as Clydesdales, this scholarship reflects the club's long-standing commitment to supporting teammates on and off the field. Whether you're new to rugby or a returning player, the Clydesdale Scholarship exists to help make playing for the Surfers more accessible.
What is a Clydesdale?
Within the San Diego Surfers, a Clydesdale is an athlete who weighs 200 pounds or more. While the name is inspired by the famous draft horse, it's about much more than size.
Clydesdales are often the powerhouse athletes of the rugby field—bringing strength, physicality, determination, and resilience to every match. They dominate collisions, carry defenders with them, anchor the scrum, and provide the momentum that helps teams move forward. Just as importantly, they embody the Surfer values of supporting teammates, embracing every body type, and proving that rugby truly is a sport for everyone.
The Clydesdale community celebrates athletes who use their strength to lift up those around them—both on the pitch and within the club.
About the Scholarship
The Clydesdale Scholarship Fund was established by former Surfers who wanted to give back to the club that helped shape them as athletes and teammates.
Each season, scholarships are awarded to players who demonstrate the "Surfer Spirit"—showing commitment to the team, supporting fellow players, embracing the club's inclusive culture, and giving their best both on and off the field.
The scholarship is designed to help offset club dues, making it easier for players to continue competing and growing within the Surfers family.
Led by Hall of Fame Surfer Jenny Chow
The scholarship is headed by Jenny Chow, a San Diego Surfers Hall of Fame alumna whose impact on the club extends far beyond her years on the field.
Jenny was an exceptional hooker known for her relentless work ethic, bruising ball carries, and fearless style of play. Opponents quickly learned that bringing her down was never easy. Equally legendary was her welcoming personality and unwavering commitment to her teammates. She has spent years giving back to the Surfers community, helping preserve the club's culture while ensuring future generations of players have the same opportunities she did.
Her leadership embodies exactly what the Clydesdale Scholarship represents: strength, generosity, and a commitment to leaving the club better than you found it.
How to Apply
Applications are open to eligible San Diego Surfers players.
As part of the application, you'll be asked to submit a short video introducing yourself and sharing:
