In our 3rd annual Surf n' Turf 7's, the San Diego Surfers proudly hosted an exciting men's and women's 7's rugby tournament that showcased some of the best talent in the region. This year's event was particularly special as the Surfers fielded three distinct teams: their competitive side, and two social sides, named the Shrimps and Sirloins. The women's side of the tournament featured a diverse array of teams, including the three teams from the Surfers organization, as well as the Pasadena Royals, WC Marines, Santa Monica Phins, and a collection of spirited players from the Las Vegas Slots and touch players who had participated in the Palm Tree Touch Tournament the day before. This blend of teams not only added to the competitive spirit but also fostered a sense of camaraderie among the players, creating an unforgettable experience.
The men's side of the tournament was equally impressive, featuring teams such as the Old Aztecs, Valley Center, Utah Peaks, Inland Empire, and OMBAC. Each team brought their unique style and strategy to the field, making for thrilling matches that kept spectators on the edge of their seats. The atmosphere was electric, with fans cheering passionately for their teams, and the spirit of rugby was palpable throughout the day.
In addition to the exhilarating matches, the tournament also featured vendors like Modish Rugger and Vortex Rugby, who set up booths at the event selling an array of awesome gear and tournament merchandise. Attendees had the opportunity to browse through stylish apparel, rugby equipment, and memorabilia, making it a perfect opportunity to support the sport while taking home some unique items. The presence of these vendors contributed to the overall festive atmosphere, encouraging fans to engage with the rugby community beyond just the matches.
As the tournament progressed, the competition intensified, and it became clear that the teams were giving it their all. On the men's side, OMBAC emerged triumphant, ultimately winning the tournament and showcasing their skill and teamwork throughout the day. Meanwhile, on the women's side, the San Diego Surfers' competitive team put forth an outstanding performance, remaining undefeated and taking home the coveted trophy. Their success was a testament to their hard work, dedication, and the strong support they received from their teammates and fans.
With another tournament win under their belt, the San Diego Surfers are now focused on their journey to nationals in Madison, WI. They are set to compete in the next qualifying tournament in Eagle Rock, where they hope to continue their winning streak. Over the last three tournaments that the San Diego Surfers have participated in, they have emerged victorious in each one, building a momentum that they are eager to maintain as they approach the national stage. Currently, the standings indicate that the San Diego Surfers are well-positioned to secure the SoCal bid, and they aim to solidify this achievement in the upcoming weekend. The excitement is palpable as players and fans alike look forward to the challenges ahead, united in their passion for rugby and their commitment to excellence.
